OKAMOTO Kihachi:
Screenwriter-director OKAMOTO Kihachi was born in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, in 1924. He joined Toho as an assistant director in 1943. He made hid debut as a director in 1958 with his All About Marriage (Kekkon no Subete). His fifth film, Outpost Desperado (Dokuritsu Gurentai), shocked Japan's filmdom of the era, with its vast scale, bringing to mind Westerns, its fast tempo and dynamic style, so unusual for war movies. Outpost Desperado will long be remembered as a pure entertainment film.
After that, OKAMOTO made several excellent gangster films and costume dramas. In 1968 he made his unusual Human Bullet, a work featuring the experimental courage that only an independent director can really possess. The film drew ratings as excellent. His latest work is Vengeance Is Such A Great Business (Sukedachiya Sukeroku).
